The lineage behind the world's leading iboga centers

Bwiti House isn't just another retreat,  it's the lineage. Led by Moughenda Mikala, a 10th-generation Bwiti shaman, Bwiti House has trained and certified more than 50 iboga providers worldwide since 1990. Many now lead their own respected centers across Costa Rica, Portugal, the United States, Mexico and Canada. Choosing Bwiti House means going straight to the root of the tradition, not a copy of it.

Iboga retreats FAQ

1. How long does an iboga ceremony last?
Vector (1) - Bwiti House Iboga retreat

A traditional iboga ceremony usually lasts 24–36 hours. The full retreat, preparation, ceremony and integration, spans several days up to two weeks for an initiation.

2. What is an iboga ceremony?
Vector (1) - Bwiti House Iboga retreat

An iboga ceremony is a guided, sacred ritual from the Bwiti tradition of Gabon, using the iboga sacred root bark for deep healing, self-discovery and spiritual awakening. It's always done with preparation, experienced guidance and aftercare never casually.

3. Is iboga different from ibogaine?
Vector (1) - Bwiti House Iboga retreat

Yes. Iboga is the whole plant (Tabernanthe iboga) used ceremonially in the Bwiti tradition. Ibogaine is a single alkaloid extracted from it, used mainly in clinical settings for addiction. Same origin, very different contexts.

4. Is iboga stronger than ayahuasca?

They work very differently. Iboga tends to be a single, long, deeply confronting "reset," while ayahuasca is usually experienced over repeated, shorter ceremonies. Neither is "stronger", they serve different kinds of healing.

5. Where can I do an authentic iboga retreat?

With Bwiti House and its certified providers worldwide, starting in Gabon, the homeland of the Bwiti tradition. Led by 10th-generation shaman Moughenda Mikala, Bwiti House has trained 50+ providers now running respected centers across Costa Rica, Portugal, the United States, Mexico and Canada.

7. Is iboga safe?
Vector (1) - Bwiti House Iboga retreat

Iboga carries real risks, especially cardiac, so it must be approached with medical screening, monitoring and experienced guidance. In the Bwiti tradition and with certified providers, safety comes from proper preparation, qualified supervision and aftercare. Never take iboga or ibogaine unsupervised.

8. Is iboga legal?
Vector (1) - Bwiti House Iboga retreat

Legality varies by country. Iboga and ibogaine are unregulated or legal in some countries and restricted in others (in the U.S., ibogaine is Schedule I). This is one reason many people travel to Gabon or other countries for authentic, legal retreats.

9. How do I prepare for an iboga retreat?

Preparation typically includes a health questionnaire and cardiac screening, dietary guidelines in the weeks before, and setting your intentions. Our team guides you through every step before you travel. (Link to: Book a discovery call.)
