Ibogaine in the Czech Republic: the short answer

Neither ibogaine nor the iboga plant is on any Czech list of controlled substances, and the Ministry of Health confirmed this in writing in 2025. Ibogaine is not an authorised medicine either, so it cannot be prescribed or sold as a treatment. This is why some iboga and ibogaine programmes operate in the Czech Republic, and why nobody checks their medical standards for you. Whatever you choose, a heart check (ECG) comes first.

Is ibogaine legal in the Czech Republic?

• Not a controlled substance: ibogaine, iboga and Tabernanthe iboga do not appear in the lists of Government Regulation 463/2013 Coll. on addictive substances (consolidated text), nor in the 2025 lists of controlled psychoactive substances (Regulation 11/2025) and psychomodulatory substances (Regulation 456/2025, which covers only kratom).
• Ministry confirmation: in reply to a 2025 freedom-of-information request, the Ministry of Health wrote that neither the iboga plant nor ibogaine is on any of these lists (Ministry of Health reply).
• Not an authorised medicine: ibogaine has no marketing authorisation, so offering it as a medical treatment raises questions under medicines law. The Ministry referred questions about advertising iboga treatment to the State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL).
• Criminal law still applies: the Criminal Code punishes harming someone's health, and the Ministry did not rule on whether encouraging the use of iboga could fall under it.

Is iboga legal in Europe?

It depends on the country. Iboga or ibogaine is prohibited in, among others, Switzerland, Iceland, France, Belgium and Denmark, and is not controlled in the Czech Republic and Portugal. Not controlled does not mean regulated: no European country authorises ibogaine as a medicine.

Can you get ibogaine treatment in the Czech Republic?

Private programmes exist, but none is an authorised medical treatment. Ask every provider for its medical screening, who supervises the night of the ceremony, and how far the nearest hospital is.

Safety: the heart check comes first

Ibogaine can prolong the QT interval, a measure of the heart's electrical cycle. Every serious provider asks for a 12-lead ECG, a liver panel and a full list of your medications before accepting you: some medicines, including SSRI antidepressants, must not be combined with iboga, and stopping them is a decision for your doctor.
