Ibogaine in Australia: the short answer

Ibogaine is listed in Schedule 4 (prescription-only) of Australia's Poisons Standard. No ibogaine product is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and doctors do not prescribe it in practice, so there is no legal ibogaine treatment clinic in Australia. Australians who want to work with iboga usually do one of three things: travel to Gabon for a traditional Bwiti retreat, travel to a clinical ibogaine programme abroad, or contact independent providers listed in our directory. Whatever you choose, a cardiac check (ECG) before any iboga or ibogaine is not optional.

Is ibogaine legal in Australia?

The Australian Poisons Standard lists ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine in Schedule 4, the list of prescription-only medicines (see the Poisons Standard on the Federal Register of Legislation). In plain terms:

• Supplying ibogaine without a prescription from an authorised practitioner is unlawful.
• Importing it without authorisation is unlawful.
• There is no TGA-approved ibogaine product, and no doctor-led treatment pathway in practice.
• Ibogaine was not part of the 2023 change that lets authorised psychiatrists prescribe psilocybin and MDMA.

You may read online that ibogaine is "Schedule 9" or "banned" in Australia. The Poisons Standard lists it in Schedule 4, not Schedule 9. Whole iboga root bark (Tabernanthe iboga) is not named separately in the Poisons Standard, so its status is unclear: check with the TGA before making any decision, and never bring iboga or ibogaine into Australia. Can you get ibogaine treatment in Australia?

Not legally as a medical treatment. No Australian clinic can offer ibogaine as an approved therapy, and you should be very careful with anyone who promises "ibogaine treatment in Australia" without saying who prescribes it, who screens your heart, and what happens in an emergency. Ibogaine affects heart rhythm, and serious incidents have been reported where people took it without screening or supervision.

Travelling from Australia to Gabon

There is no direct flight: Australians usually reach Libreville with one or two connections through hubs such as Addis Ababa, Istanbul, Paris or Casablanca. Safety: the heart check comes first

Ibogaine can prolong the QT interval, a measure of the heart's electrical cycle. That is why every serious provider asks for a 12-lead ECG, a liver panel and a full list of your medications before accepting you: some medicines, including SSRI antidepressants, must not be combined with iboga, and stopping them is a decision for your doctor. Iboga or ibogaine: what is the difference?
